Fibre
Fibre TV
This is fast becoming a cost effective solution for new build homes where there are long cable runs or a number of blocks of flats in a particular area, as fibre networks carry very little signal loss.
A fibre TV system can minimise the number of antennas required meaning that one antenna array can potentially cover many hundreds of dwellings, meaning that a fibre system can be far more cost effective on large systems.
Fibre Broadband
Fibre can also be used to distribute Broadband on a large scale; this is undertaken by installing a GPON headend (Gigabit Passive Optical Network).
GPON is a point-to-multipoint access mechanism. Its main characteristic is the use of passive splitters in the fibre distribution network, enabling one single feeding fibre from the provider’s central office to serve multiple homes and small businesses.
GPON has a downstream capacity of 2.488 GB/s and an upstream capacity of 1.244 GB/s that is shared among users. Encryption is used to keep each user’s data secured and private from other users.
Although there are other technologies that could provide fibre to the home or business, fibre networks using GPON are generally considered the strongest candidate for widespread deployment
The GPON can also be used to distribute the broadband signal to external radio masts; this is then able to transmit Wi-Fi outdoors on a large scale.
